Background
Iran is the Islamic Republic of Iran, a theocratic state on the northern shore of the strait of Hormuz. Its political system combines elected institutions with clerical authority centred on The Supreme Leader. The regular Artesh and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps operate as separate military structures.
Iran's geography gives it lasting weight in Gulf security and energy trade. the strait of Hormuz is a principal route between The Gulf and the open ocean, making Iranian policy towards navigation important to nearby states and oil exporters. On 16 August, Iran's parliament asserted a role in managing the strait alongside the executive and foreign ministry.
Iran also remains a significant subject of international nuclear diplomacy and sanctions policy. Its programme, regional military links and energy exports ensure that decisions taken in Tehran affect relations with Gulf states, European governments, Russia, China and the United States.
Key Issues
Nuclear monitoring
Iran faces renewed nuclear scrutiny
On 1 September, the International Atomic Energy Agency said it still could not verify Iran's nuclear material and called access to the Isfahan plant urgent. That leaves Tehran's programme under a monitoring gap that one later inspection cannot simply erase.
On 9 September, the agency's Board of Governors referred Iran to the UN Security Council by 23 votes to three, with eight abstentions. Russia and China opposed the referral and can veto later binding measures, but the vote placed Iran's nuclear file back before the Council for the first time in two decades.
Hormuz routing
Iran retains Hormuz leverage
On 9 September, Iran declared a restricted maritime area from Chabahar into The Gulf of Oman without publishing coordinates. The absence of a boundary left shipping firms and insurers unable to plot the warning, but it kept Tehran central to decisions on traffic near its coast.
On 14 September, Iranian officials met Gulf states in Oman to discuss safe passage through the strait of Hormuz. Tehran said the route was the talks' only subject, keeping sanctions, tanker exchanges and the nuclear file outside that channel.
Common Questions
Iran faces renewed nuclear scrutiny
What does 'loss of continuity of knowledge' mean for Iran's nuclear programme?
It is the IAEA's formal legal finding, invoked on 8 June 2026 after 97 days without inspector access, that the evidentiary chain of custody for Iran's nuclear material has been broken. Roughly 240 kg of enriched uranium can no longer be accounted for, meaning any future inspection cannot verify it has not been diverted.Source: event

What is the Islamabad MOU between Iran and the US?
The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed 16 June 2026, commits Iran to destroy its 440.9 kg of 60%-enriched uranium under IAEA supervision by a mechanism still to be agreed. It ties sanctions relief and roughly $100 billion in frozen assets to a future final agreement. Khamenei endorsed it on 18 June but branded full IAEA access an excessive demand.Source: event
What is the IRGC and why does it matter?
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is Iran's parallel military-political institution. It controls major industries and has operationally sidelined the elected civilian government, ignoring presidential Ceasefire orders during the 2026 war.

Why did Iran get knocked out of the 2026 World Cup despite not losing their last match?
Iran drew 1-1 with Egypt in their final Group G match on 21 June in Seattle and were eliminated on the best-placed third-place comparison, despite not losing that game. A 24-hour visa protocol and the denial of 14 support staff visas also shadowed their tournament.Source: Lowdown 2026 FIFA World Cup
Did Iran stop retaliating against US forces in July 2026?
The mutual stand-down held for only four days. CENTCOM announced no new US action on 24 July and Iran ceased retaliating by 25 July, but US strikes resumed on 29 July 2026 after IRGC missiles hit Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, ending the pause.Source: Lowdown
Has the US Treasury sanctioned anyone linked to Iran's Supreme Leader directly?
Yes. OFAC designated Dubai-based financier Ali Ansari on 10 July 2026 as directly linked to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and the IRGC, the first Treasury action to name Mojtaba Khamenei personally.Source: OFAC
Did anyone die when Iran attacked tankers in July 2026?
Yes. The IRGC disabled two supertankers in Omani waters on 14 July 2026, the first tanker strikes of the war with confirmed seafarer deaths: one killed according to UAE reporting, two according to the International Maritime Agency.Source: Lowdown iran-conflict-2026
When was Ali Khamenei finally buried?
Ali Khamenei's state funeral ran from 4 to 9 July 2026, more than four months after he was killed in the 28 February opening strikes. His son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not attend.Source: Lowdown iran-conflict-2026
What is Iran's current Supreme Leader position on the nuclear deal?
On 18 June 2026, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first written public message since taking office, endorsing the Islamabad MoU tactically but calling full IAEA access and any transfer of Iran's HEU stockpile 'excessive demands'. He delegated accountability for the deal's outcomes to President Pezeshkian.Source: event
How much has Iran's oil revenue fallen since the war began?
Iran's oil exports fell below 300,000 Barrels Per Day in May 2026, down from 1.84 million bpd before the war. Kpler and Lloyd's List data put the revenue loss at roughly $5.8 billion since April, with some 67 million barrels stranded inside The Gulf behind the CENTCOM blockade.Source: event
What happened at the Doha Iran peace talks in May 2026?
Iran's full war Cabinet flew home from Doha on 26 May 2026 after intense talks. A $24 billion frozen-asset structure was surfaced ($12bn on deal announcement, $12bn on implementation) but no instrument was signed. Trump then rejected both Russia and China as uranium custodians on 27 May.Source: entity background
What is the current status of Iran's nuclear programme?
Iran's nuclear programme remains opaque and unverified. The IAEA had no access since the 11 April 2026 Majlis vote suspending inspections, and on 8 June 2026 the agency formally invoked 'loss of continuity of knowledge', finding roughly 240 kg of enriched uranium can no longer be verified as undiverted. Iran still holds a declared 440.9 kg enriched to 60%; the Islamabad MoU (16 June) commits to its eventual destruction, but the verification mechanism remains unagreed.Source: entity background
What happened at Barakah nuclear plant on 17 May 2026?
Three drones crossed the UAE border; one struck a generator on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant perimeter, the first nuclear facility targeted in the 2026 war. UAE air defences intercepted the other two. No radiation leak or injuries were reported.Source: UAE Ministry of Defence / IAEA
When did the Iran-US war begin and how long has it lasted?
The war began 28 February 2026 with joint US-Israeli strikes that killed Khamenei. An informal Ceasefire never hardened into an instrument; Iran signed the Islamabad MoU on 16 June 2026 committing to destroy its enriched-uranium stockpile under a mechanism still to be agreed, but no durable peace followed. Washington enforced a Hormuz blockade by force on 14 July 2026 after the IRGC's first fatal tanker attacks, so the conflict remains unresolved and constitutionally unanchored well past the original 60-day War Powers Act deadline.Source: Lowdown iran-conflict-2026
What is Araghchi's Iran counter-proposal to the US?
Iran presented a 10-point counter-proposal to the US position, transmitted via Pakistan on 3 May. The document acknowledged Hormuz as a legitimate negotiating item for the first time, while rejecting uranium transfers.Source: Lowdown
Why did the US reimpose the Hormuz naval blockade in July 2026?
Reporting on 14 July said Washington moved to enforce a Hormuz blockade by force at 20:00 GMT, following CENTCOM strikes and the IRGC's first fatal tanker attacks in Omani waters. As of 20 July the strait's status remains contested rather than confirmed closed: the IRGC separately claims to have shut it and destroyed two tankers, a claim CENTCOM denies, and verified AIS data that day showed 479 vessels anchored regionally, 36 running dark and 123 still broadcasting inside the strait.
What is Iran's position on the Strait of Hormuz talks?
Iran runs Hormuz as a bilateral state-to-state favouritism system, granting passage to friendly states (Russia, China, Iraq) while blocking US weapons transit. Tehran transmitted a 10-point counter-proposal via Pakistan in May 2026; Washington rejected it verbally with no signed counter-text.Source: Lowdown iran-conflict-2026
How does Iran's economy survive under wartime sanctions?
Iran's economy still runs on Chinese crude purchases (roughly 90% of exports), Hormuz selective-passage tolls, and sanctions-evasion infrastructure built over decades. The Brent premium this answer once cited has since collapsed: Brent fell from above $106 in mid-May to $88.10 on 17 July 2026, trading above $90 on 20 July, as the market repriced between diplomatic de-escalation and the renewed Hormuz blockade.Source: OFAC; OilPrice analysts
Who actually controls Iran now that Khamenei is dead?
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) holds effective power. Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed Supreme Leader on 7 March 2026 under IRGC pressure but communicates only through sealed handwritten messages after three surgeries. President Pezeshkian's Ceasefire orders have been openly ignored by IRGC commanders.Source: Lowdown iran-conflict-2026
How long has Iran's internet been shut down?
Iran's nationwide internet blackout ran from 28 February 2026, reaching 1,704 hours by 11 May 2026, the longest continuous national blackout NetBlocks had recorded, before President Pezeshkian ordered it lifted on 25 May 2026 with partial restoration confirmed the next day.
What is OFAC General License U and why did it lapse?
GL-U was the OFAC authorisation keeping 325 tankers carrying $31.5 billion of Iranian crude legally saleable in transit. It lapsed at 00:01 EDT on 19 April 2026 with no renewal, no replacement, and no Federal Register notice.
Did the US-Israeli strikes destroy Iran's nuclear programme?
No, according to Haaretz analysis published 18 May 2026 citing a former senior Israeli military intelligence official. Underground enrichment infrastructure and missile production lines are assessed as largely operational.Source: Haaretz / Amos Harel
Who is Iran's Supreme Leader now?
Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the killed Ali Khamenei, was appointed on 7 March 2026 under IRGC pressure, the first dynastic succession in the office's history. He lacks the marja theological credentials constitutionally required and has not appeared publicly since appointment.Source: entity background
Is the IAEA locked out of Iran's nuclear sites?
What started the Iran war in 2026?
Joint US-Israeli strikes (Operations Roaring Lion / EPIC FURY) on 28 February 2026 killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and decapitated the senior military command.

How the World Sees Them
China
Beijing views Iran's crude as a strategic supply line and resists OFAC mainland enforcement under MOFCOM Blocking Rules. China was also proposed as a uranium custodian but rejected by Trump on 27 May, limiting Beijing's diplomatic leverage.
India
New Delhi summoned Iran's ambassador in April after IRGC gunboats fired on Indian-flagged tankers; lost its Chabahar waiver on 26 April. Three Indian sailors died when CENTCOM struck the MT Settebello on 11 June, sharpening New Delhi's position on blockade enforcement.
Israel
Netanyahu described the strike campaign as a goal pursued for 40 years; continues co-ordinating with CENTCOM on target sets while maintaining operational independence. Israel's aim of eliminating Iran's nuclear option remains unverified.
Russia
Moscow frames Iran as a partner in a multipolar order and offered uranium-custody guarantees; Trump rejected Russia as custodian on 27 May. Russia's GL-134B waiver survived while Iran's GL-U lapsed.
Gulf States
Saudi Arabia issued its first formal protest demanding an end to Gulf strikes. The UAE absorbed the Barakah drone attack diplomatically. Riyadh held its foreign ministry silent for six days after the 25 May Arafah Day strikes.
Global South
Speaker Ghalibaf addressed BRICS Delhi framing Iran's resistance as a new-world-order inflection point. India mediates through Araghchi visits; Pakistan channels the written US-Iran exchange.
United States
Washington frames Iran as an adversary requiring denuclearisation and Hormuz reopening. The Islamabad MOU defers enrichment, stockpile, and inspection architecture to a 60-day window; CENTCOM ended the blockade but kept two carrier strike groups on station.
