4 min read
18:37UTC

Houthi missiles killed 13 people at Riyadh's main airport on 10 and 11 October, days after Saudi-backed Yemeni forces pushed towards Bab al-Mandeb. The Security Council condemned the Houthis and affirmed Saudi self-defence. A container ship sank in the strait of Hormuz after a projectile hit it. Washington acted through Treasury designations, and Tehran set a new precondition for talks: credible guarantees against new attacks.

Key takeaway

Saudi Arabia moved from absorbing strikes to fighting back: its jets back a ground push, and pact partners pledged forces.

Briefing analysis

Primary parallel: In January 2022 Houthi drones and missiles struck Abu Dhabi, and in March 2022 a strike set fire to Aramco's Jeddah depot. A UN-brokered truce followed in April 2022 and largely held for more than a year.

Counter-parallel: In September 2019 drones and missiles hit Aramco's Abqaiq plant. The Houthis claimed it, Washington and Riyadh blamed Iran, and Saudi Arabia did not strike back at Iran.

A projectile hit the container ship GFS Pride inside Hormuz on 13 October and it went down the next day, the third merchant ship lost in the war.

The Security Council's 15 October statement condemns the Houthi strikes on Riyadh and backs Saudi self-defence, with Russia and China on board and Iran unnamed.

Closing comments

Up, on the Saudi front. The tipping mechanism is deployment. The three states pledged on 5 October 2026 to provide forces for rapid deployment to Saudi Arabia, Al Jazeera reported, but no outlet gave a size or date. Netanyahu told Army Radio he does not favour a strike on Iran before the 27 October election, Reuters reported, and that line expires with the vote.
