River boat carries Ebola 1,000 km downriver

5 min read
13:42UTC

A river boat carried Ebola about 1,000 km to Sud-Ubangi, on DR Congo's borders with two neighbours, while MSF says North Kivu now has nearly 40% of new cases and 59.7% of its confirmed patients have died. Bangladesh has passed 1,000 measles deaths. Eight people near Frankfurt Airport caught Malaria without travelling, and three died.

Key takeaway

The national Ebola decline is Ituri's; North Kivu and the river route to Sud-Ubangi now carry the risk.

WHO's bulletin for 23 September counted 7,890 confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases and 3,799 deaths in DR Congo. Ituri is falling, but North Kivu now supplies nearly 40% of new cases, Médecins Sans Frontières says.

North Kivu has the fewest isolation beds, and 59.7% of its confirmed patients have died. WHO reports a slight decline in North Kivu since mid-September. The aid group says the province's share of new cases has risen from 24% in late August.

Interim governor Jean-René Galekwa Vundawe declared Ebola in Sud-Ubangi on 10 September; the index case had sailed from Kisangani, about 1,000 km away.

A passenger on a river boat from Kisangani carried Ebola to Sud-Ubangi, in DR Congo's far north-west. The interim governor declared the outbreak on 10 September, and two cases were confirmed by 1 October.

Sud-Ubangi sits across the Ubangi river from two other countries. Its doctors were on strike over pay as the cases arrived, and Al Jazeera reported a complete shortage of experimental vaccine in nearby Tshopo.

Bangladesh recorded 1,030 measles-related deaths by 14 September among 172,720 suspected cases; in all of 2025 it recorded 132 cases and no deaths.

Bangladesh recorded 1,030 measles-related deaths by 14 September, among 172,720 suspected cases. In all of 2025 it logged 132 cases and no deaths.

A spring campaign reached 19.75 million children, yet babies too young for the first dose at nine months keep dying. At one hospital, 86% of 57 child deaths were under 15 months old.

ECDC says eight people with no travel history caught falciparum malaria at or near Frankfurt Airport, and three have died; traps have found no Anopheles mosquito.

Eight people with no travel to Malaria countries caught the deadliest Malaria parasite at or near Frankfurt Airport, and three died. Europe's previous airport clusters reached six cases.

Frankfurt's health department has trapped no Anopheles mosquitoes nearby, and none of the eight had a travel history to prompt a test. Genotyping due at the end of October should show one source or several.

WHO says Madagascar reported 703 of the world's 1,370 confirmed mpox cases in July, all clade Ib, as a permanent vaccine stockpile opened on 27 August.

Madagascar reported 703 of the world's 1,370 confirmed mpox cases in July, WHO says. By 16 August the island had 3,436 confirmed cases and 22 deaths across 75 of its 115 districts.

In the week to 16 August, 67% of tests came back positive, so many cases go unrecorded. On 27 August a new global stockpile of mpox vaccine opened, with countries able to request doses from September.

WHO's working group closed its eighth session in Geneva on 18 September without agreeing the annex on sharing pathogen samples, its second failure in a row.

WHO talks on sharing virus samples ended in Geneva on 18 September without an agreed text, the second session in a row to do so. The annex covers samples, genetic data and what countries get back.

One week later, leaders at the UN in New York approved a pandemic declaration. The WHO Pandemic Agreement still cannot open for signature until the annex is adopted, due by May 2027.

A G20 foreign ministers' meeting in New York on 23 September took Ebola pledges to about US$2.997bn, Africa CDC says; the United States gave US$887m of it.

About 2,000 frontline workers in DR Congo had received Ervebo, a vaccine licensed against a different Ebola species, by 10 September; the Bundibugyo trial had not begun.

About 2,000 health and frontline workers in DR Congo had received Ervebo by 10 September, WHO said. Merck's vaccine is licensed only against the Zaire Ebola species, not Bundibugyo.

A trial of 20,000 doses against Bundibugyo had not started, and WHO expects it in October or November. It is planned for Ituri, where cases are falling, so it may struggle to find enough patients. A separate MSF study of frontline workers began on 19 September.

Marie-Célestin Karondwa, a local leader of DR Congo's governing party in Butembo, was attacked at his home on 27 September and died of his injuries. He had spoken about Ebola prevention on local radio, Al Jazeera reported.

WHO attacked him, and why, has not been established. Five health facilities in Butembo burned between 26 July and 1 September amid rumours about the Ebola response.

Cambodia's sixth human H5N1 case of 2026, a poultry farmer, is one of only 11 worldwide this year by Hong Kong's count, against 81 in 2024.

Cambodia confirmed its sixth human H5N1 bird flu case of 2026 on 27 September, a poultry farmer in Oddar Meanchey. Hong Kong's health agency counts 11 human cases worldwide this year, against 81 in 2024.

The virus has not gone quiet in birds. Poultry outbreaks restarted in September in France, Sweden, Bulgaria and Canada, as the northern autumn season begins.

Sixteen European countries had reported 1,765 locally acquired West Nile cases by 30 September, as France logged 124 local chikungunya cases and Aedes aegypti bred in London.

By 30 September, 16 European countries had reported 1,765 West Nile virus infections caught locally, the EU's disease agency said. On 3 September the count stood at 1,086, against a ten-year average of 736.

Mosquito-borne viruses reached further north in 2026. The Netherlands had its first human West Nile cases since 2020, and a breeding colony of a tropical mosquito turned up in east London.

WHO's annual report, released on 29 September, counted 7,870 Cholera deaths in 2025 from 47 countries. That is the most reported to WHO since 1999, and 30% more than in 2024.

Vaccine output rose from about 30 million to 80 million doses a year, yet deaths still climbed. Seven countries, including Sudan, Yemen and DR Congo, carried about 90% of cases and deaths.

Closing comments

Ebola: sideways nationally, with Ituri falling and North Kivu supplying nearly 40% of new cases, though WHO reports a slight decline there since mid-September. The tipping point is Sud-Ubangi: a confirmed case in the Central African Republic or the Republic of the Congo would make this a cross-border outbreak on a second front. measles in the Americas tips on Peru after the Señor de los Milagros festivities in October and Pope Leo XIV's visit in November. Frankfurt tips on the genotyping due at the end of October, and on any Anopheles caught in the traps.
