Pandemics and Biosecurity: Screwworm cases in Mexico rise fivefoldBackground
Querétaro is a state in central Mexico, well north of the Guatemalan border where Mexico's New World screwworm outbreak began. screwworm larvae hatch in open wounds and feed on living tissue, chiefly in cattle but also in people.
The state recorded one of four screwworm deaths in Mexico in 2026, according to Secretaría de Salud figures reported on 18 September; the others were in Oaxaca, Veracruz and Yucatán. Mexico counted 575 human cases that year to the same date, and 692 people infested in 27 states since April 2025. A death this FAR north shows how widely the parasite now ranges.
Human cases follow the number of flies in the field. Older people, anyone with a chronic wound and households living close to livestock in hot countryside face the most risk, so a state's case and death count tracks how far the animal-health response has failed.
