Pandemics and Biosecurity: Cambodia confirms sixth human H5N1 caseBackground
Oddar Meanchey is a province in north-western Cambodia on the border with Thailand. On 27 September 2026 Cambodia confirmed a human H5N1 bird flu case there, a poultry farmer in his forties and the country's sixth of the year. He fell ill after a poultry outbreak in the province's Trapeang Prasat district was confirmed on 23 September.
The case fits the pattern Cambodia has shown since human infections returned in February 2023 after seven quiet years: Cambodian households keep poultry close to living space, and handle or eat sick birds. Cambodia has recorded 40 human cases and 15 deaths since 2003, and it supplied six of the 11 human cases counted worldwide in 2026 to 1 October by Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection.
Oddar Meanchey produced Cambodia's sixth case
Officials confirmed a poultry outbreak in Oddar Meanchey's Trapeang Prasat district on 23 September 2026. Four days later Cambodia confirmed a human H5N1 infection in the province, a poultry farmer and the country's sixth human case of the year.
Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection counted 11 human H5N1 cases worldwide in 2026 to 1 October, against 81 in 2024, so Cambodia supplied more than half the year's global tally. The Oddar Meanchey case landed as poultry outbreaks restarted in September in France, Sweden, Bulgaria and Canada.
