El Universal is a national daily newspaper published in Mexico City. In September 2026 it published the federal health ministry's latest count of human New World screwworm infestations.
On 18 September 2026 the paper relayed figures from the Secretaría de Salud's special surveillance system for screwworm myiasis. By the ministry's count, 575 people had been infested in 2026, up from 117 across the whole of 2025, and 692 in 27 states since April 2025. The same figures put four deaths, all in 2026, in Oaxaca, Querétaro, Veracruz and Yucatán.
The paper's state breakdown traced the fly's spread north from the Guatemalan border: Yucatán (47), Puebla (61), Oaxaca (68) and Veracruz (116) trailed Chiapas's 165. Those numbers matter beyond Mexico, because the United States treats screwworm as a livestock trade threat and suspended imports of live Mexican cattle in 2025.
