Pandemics and Biosecurity: Ebola reaches Sud-Ubangi by river boatBackground
Kisangani is the capital of Tshopo province in DR Congo, on the Congo river. With few paved roads in DR Congo, Kisangani's boats carry people and cargo to ports hundreds of kilometres away.
Tshopo recorded its first confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases in late July 2026. By September WHO was reporting renewed transmission in the province, and Al Jazeera reported a complete shortage of experimental vaccine there. That month a passenger leaving Kisangani by boat took the virus to Sud-Ubangi, putting the outbreak on the borders of the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo.
The route makes Kisangani a junction for the epidemic. Cases that reach the city can travel by water to provinces FAR from the outbreak's origin in Ituri.
