Pandemics and Biosecurity

A river boat carried Ebola about 1,000 km to Sud-Ubangi, on DR Congo's borders with two neighbours, while MSF says North Kivu now has nearly 40% of new cases and 59.7% of its confirmed patients have died. Bangladesh has passed 1,000 measles deaths. Eight people near Frankfurt Airport caught malaria without travelling, and three died.

Guatemala has 30,371 confirmed measles cases and 26 deaths, two and a half times Mexico's outbreak, and the region's framing never followed the numbers. DR Congo's Bundibugyo outbreak is now the largest ever reported in that country, and the science arriving to fight it reports out after it ends. WHO, FAO and WOAH warn that a new MERS lineage may be establishing in Nile Basin camels.

Africa CDC's latest situation report puts two-thirds of this outbreak's deaths outside any treatment centre, with 264 beds standing empty in the epicentre while a neighbouring province runs at 134% of capacity. Uganda declared itself Ebola-free on 28 July, thirty days before the surveillance window WHO recorded, and three institutional records disagree about why. US measles has broken the 2025 record, with zero deaths so far.

More than 80% of new Ebola cases in DR Congo now arise outside known contact chains, and WHO calls it the third-largest outbreak on record at 2,344 cases and 930 deaths. Nine of twelve health posts have closed in one Djugu health area. Geneva deferred the pandemic treaty's pathogen-sharing annex a fourth time, and Cambodia produced four of the world's seven new H5N1 cases since February.

Health-worker infections in the Bundibugyo Ebola response have tripled to 112, with 35 dead, and Africa CDC has issued a formal appeal for responder protection as a US responder infected in Bunia was flown to Germany. Patient isolation has slipped to 39%, away from the 70% the CDC's model says decides the outbreak. Philadelphia retracted a false measles alarm but named a real airport exposure, and WHO published its first blueprint on fungal disease.

Eleven weeks into the first Bundibugyo Ebola emergency, two long-absent tools arrived in 48 hours: the first patient dosed in a treatment trial and the first emergency-listed diagnostic. Confirmed cases still climbed to 1,481, and patient isolation, near 44 percent, sits below the level the CDC model says would break transmission. Governments meet in Geneva this week to try again on pandemic-era vaccine sharing.

A French doctor returning from Ituri tested positive for Bundibugyo Ebola, the first case outside Africa in this outbreak, after passing DRC exit checks while still incubating. Scientists explained why H5N1 hid in dairy udders for two years, WHO found one in six infections now beats first-line antibiotics, and Africa CDC won the right to spend pandemic money without WHO.

WHO counts 695 confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases and 138 deaths, up 30 percent in five days across 29 health zones. Contact tracing has jumped past 70 percent, but only 46 percent of confirmed patients are isolated, and isolation is the number the CDC model says decides the outbreak. A treatment trial has finally gone live.

CDC modelling puts the Bundibugyo outbreak's reproduction number at 2.51 and shows its fate turning on one number: how many patients get isolated. WHO has recalibrated the headline count, cutting suspected cases from around 1,000 to 116 and reporting 534 confirmed. The confirmed line is still rising. Five non-Ebola signals run alongside, from a barnyard bacterium spreading in EU saunas to a malaria surge in Mayotte.

Donors pledged nearly $500m for the Bundibugyo Ebola response, 57% over target, in the same week confirmed cases rose 58% and the outbreak jumped the border into Uganda. Eight people died as the only experimental treatment stayed unauthorised. Meanwhile the MV Hondius hantavirus cluster is quietly burning out.

WHO's first Bundibugyo Ebola emergency has tripled to 831 cases and 186 deaths in a week, and reached rebel-held South Kivu. The first American case, surgeon Peter Stafford, was evacuated to Germany. The response machinery stumbled on three fronts: a US travel ban against WHO advice, the pandemic treaty's vaccine-sharing annex deferred to 2027, and US preparedness funding pulled and backstopped by others.

WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern today for a Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo and Uganda. Africa CDC moved first on Saturday. Imperial College London assesses transmission ran undetected for weeks. No approved vaccine or treatment exists for this Ebola species.

Lab evidence published 12 May shows the H5N1 strain dominant in US dairy cattle replicates more efficiently in human nasal tissue and partly evades innate immune defence. Idaho's dairy outbreak surged to 59 quarantined herds and the national US total crossed 1,047, the same week USDA ended mandatory interstate cattle testing. The MV Hondius Andes hantavirus cluster grew to 11 cases across 6 countries, prompting a UK military supply drop to a remote South Atlantic island.

An Andes-strain hantavirus case has now been confirmed in a Swiss passenger from the MV Hondius cluster, the only hantavirus capable of person-to-person spread. H5N1 has resurfaced in Idaho dairy cattle, and a new Emory study finds the virus in milking-parlour air.
