Pandemics and Biosecurity: Ebola reaches Sud-Ubangi by river boatBackground
The Central African Republic is a landlocked state in central Africa. Its southern frontier with DR Congo runs along the Ubangi river, so river traffic and cross-border movement link it directly to DR Congo's Sud-Ubangi province on the other bank.
That link matters while DR Congo fights its 2026 Bundibugyo Ebola epidemic, a species with no licensed vaccine or treatment. Since Sud-Ubangi's outbreak was declared on 10 September, the Central African Republic has shared a border with an affected province, alongside the Republic of the Congo.
Africa CDC lists the country among ten at risk of imported cases, with Kenya, Angola, South Sudan and the Republic of the Congo.
