President Zelenskyy dismissed Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on 21 July and appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi, a 43-year-old general known for decentralised command. Syrskyi's removal outranks two other changes in the same eight days, the sackings of defence minister Fedorov and general-staff chief Hnatov.
Nearly a week of protests across eight cities demanded Syrskyi's removal and the sacked defence minister's return. Syrskyi had led Ukraine's military since February 2024.
