Kryvyi Rih

Kryvyi Rih is Ukraine's largest city by area and one of its principal industrial centres, with a pre-war population of around 640,000. It stretches roughly 130 km along the Inhulets river in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the elongated shape a product of the iron ore deposits that run the length of the urban district. The city hosts the Kryvbas mining-and-metallurgy complex, historically the largest iron ore producer in the Soviet Union, and is home to the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih steel plant. It is also the birthplace and home city of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a fact Russia has repeatedly exploited in targeted strike messaging. On 23 June 2026 a Russian Iskander Ballistic missile struck the city, killing three people and wounding 23.

Kryvyi Rih lies approximately 300 km south-east of Kyiv and around 150 km from the current front line, placing it within comfortable range of Iskander-M ballistic missiles (Max range ~500 km) launched from Russian-occupied territory. The city's heavy industry has made it a strategic economic target throughout the war; strikes on its Energy infrastructure have periodically disrupted steel production. Zelenskyy's personal connection to the city adds a dimension of psychological targeting to Russian strikes, a pattern noted by Ukrainian officials after multiple attacks.

The city's metallurgical economy is directly tied to the war's outcome: its iron ore and steel output feed European supply chains, and ArcelorMittal has maintained partial operations despite repeated power outages. Kryvyi Rih is also strategically positioned as a logistics hub for forces in the southern theatre; sustained damage to its infrastructure would compound operational difficulties for Ukrainian rear-area logistics.
