Iran Conflict 2026Background
Joseph Aoun made the most direct English-language accusation of Tehran by any Lebanese head of state since the war began on 5 June 2026, telling CNN's Christiane Amanpour that Iran is using Lebanon as a bargaining chip in its talks with Washington. He said he had told the IRGC directly: 'It's not your country, it's our country,' and urged Hezbollah towards diplomacy. Iran responded on three fronts the following day: Foreign Minister Araghchi disputed the bargaining-chip framing on X, Ministry spokesman Baghaei accused Aoun of betraying Iran's allies, and Supreme Leader adviser Ali Akbar Velayati warned that 'diplomatic naivety carries a heavy cost.' On 25 June 2026, the fifth round of Israel-Lebanon talks in Washington collapsed without an agreed model-zone map for the Litani river; Aoun had stated Beirut would accept 'nothing less' than full Israeli withdrawal from south of the Litani, while Israel sought Lebanese Armed Forces deployment only in territory it had already vacated. Iran's nuclear precondition, a Lebanon Ceasefire with LAF handover, remained unmet, keeping broader nuclear sub-talks in abeyance.
Aoun was elected Lebanon's President in January 2025, ending a 26-month vacancy made possible by Hezbollah's severe military degradation in late 2024. He had commanded the Lebanese Armed Forces since 2017, cultivating close ties with Washington, which funded the LAF as a counterweight to Hezbollah. Under PM Nawaf Salam, his government banned Hezbollah's military operations, arrested IRGC personnel, reinstated Iranian Visa requirements, and in March 2026 expelled Iranian Ambassador-Designate Sheibani, steps no previous administration dared take.
On 16 April 2026 Aoun became central to the Lebanon Ceasefire drama when Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Marco Rubio called him before calling the Israelis. The diplomatic sequencing elevated Beirut's standing but did not stop the conflict; the Ceasefire's durability remained uncertain as Iran hardened its public language against the Aoun government through June.
