Background

Jask is a port town in Hormozgan Province on the Gulf of Oman, roughly 180km east of the Strait of Hormuz. Its position outside the strait makes it Iran's hedge against any Hormuz blockade: the Goureh-Jask crude terminal, opened in 2021 and fed by a 1,000km pipeline from Bushehr province, can handle up to a million barrels a day of crude, though as of late 2024 it had shipped only a test cargo and was not operating as a routine export route.

Militarily, Jask gives Iran early-warning radar and missile-launch capability east of the strait, which is why it featured among the air-defence and radar sites CENTCOM struck on 9-10 June 2026, alongside Kish Island and other Gulf sites, in retaliation for Iran's downing of a US Apache helicopter.

The town has stayed inside the strike zone since: Iranian state media reported an Iranian Navy lieutenant killed there on 12 July during CENTCOM's third strike wave of that week, an account CENTCOM has not confirmed.
