JD Vance flew to Geneva on 21 June and met Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir and Qatar co-mediated. Al Jazeera reported the first round concluded the same day.
The meeting reversed Vance's cancellation two days earlier, after Iran's military closed the strait of Hormuz on 20 June. Iran's escalation appears to have forced Washington back to the table rather than away from it.
