Iran Conflict 2026Background
Tim Hawkins is a US Navy Captain serving as spokesman for US Central Command, or CENTCOM. The command covers the Middle East and Central Asia. In that role, he communicates the command's position on Commercial shipping and military operations connected to the strait of Hormuz.
On 20 June, following the IRGC's second closure declaration, Hawkins issued CENTCOM's rebuttal that Iran did not control the strait of Hormuz. The same day, CENTCOM reported that 55 merchant vessels carrying 17 million barrels had used a cleared route through Oman's coastal waters. These statements placed Hawkins at the public-facing end of CENTCOM's response to the shipping disruption.
Hawkins reports escort totals
On 20 August, Captain Tim Hawkins said US Central Command had assisted more than 660 million barrels of crude since early May. He also said CENTCOM had escorted about 1,300 vessels over the same period. Hawkins presented the figures as CENTCOM's public account of its role in keeping traffic moving.
The same report noted a separate publication estimate of about 10 million barrels a day through the strait on 20 August. It said that figure was above the rate implied by CENTCOM's cumulative total, and suggested it might reflect capacity or a peak day rather than sustained throughput. Hawkins did not provide a daily throughput figure in the cited account.
