Lyman is a town in northern Donetsk Oblast, on the Siverskyi Donets river, with a pre-war population of about 20,000. Its rail junction links supply routes between the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which is why both armies have fought over it.
Russian forces briefly occupied Lyman in 2022 and lost it to a Ukrainian counteroffensive in October that year. It has stayed under Ukrainian control since.
Its position makes it a gauge of the northern Donetsk front. ISW's September assessment held that Ukraine had contested the initiative for the first time since the August 2024 Kursk offensive. The wider count remains contested: DeepState raised its figure for Russia's July-September gains to 341 sq km from 107, because Ukrainian advances it had published late moved the baseline. Russia lost net ground in May and June.
The salient threatening the town is gone
For much of 2026 a Russian bulge north of Lyman threatened to outflank the fortress cities of Donetsk Oblast. On 12 September ISW assessed that Ukrainian forces had eliminated it, with fighting moved back to the Zherebets River. Russian military bloggers conceded the ground; no Independent source has confirmed it.
The gain followed months in which Moscow's claims ran well ahead of the map. Valery Gerasimov said on 21 April that Russia had seized 1,700 sq km in 2026; ISW verified 340 sq km. For Lyman, the salient's removal means the immediate encirclement risk has passed, though the town stays a front-line target.
