Background

Israel has mobilised reservists, launched what the IDF describes as a major Lebanon offensive, and doubled the 36th Armoured Division on its northern front. Authorities also sealed Al-Aqsa for Eid, the first closure since 1967.

The Yom Kippur War ran from 6 to 25 October 1973, when Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack across the Suez Canal and Golan Heights on the Jewish holy day. Israel was caught by intelligence failure, then mobilised reservists, held both fronts, and pushed into Egyptian and Syrian territory before a US-mediated Ceasefire ended the fighting.

The war triggered the OPEC oil embargo, drove the 1970s Stagflation, and cemented Israeli doctrine around pre-emption, rapid reserve mobilisation, and strategic depth. Russian drone and satellite transfers to Iran in the current war echo the Soviet resupply of Egypt and Syria in 1973, and Israeli planners are treating this as a multi-front contingency from week one.
