Sleiman Frangieh

Sleiman Frangieh was designated by the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control on 18 June 2026 (designation reference sb0535), alongside Mahmoud Qamati, as a Hezbollah-aligned Lebanese official accused of obstructing Lebanon's peace process. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Hezbollah must disarm for Lebanon to achieve a secure and prosperous future and that Treasury would continue targeting the group's financial networks.

Frangieh leads the Marada Movement, a historically pro-Syrian Maronite Christian political party based in northern Lebanon. He is a close personal associate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and has maintained longstanding ties with both the Syrian government and Hezbollah. He was a candidate for Lebanon's presidency during the prolonged 2022-2024 presidential vacancy, backed by Hezbollah's political bloc, but was ultimately not elected when Joseph Aoun became president in January 2025.

The June 2026 designation frames Frangieh as part of a Hezbollah political-financial network spanning Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Oman. It came with no Iran sanctions relief and was explicitly not linked to nuclear negotiation progress, indicating US Treasury was maintaining pressure on Hezbollah's Lebanese political allies regardless of the broader Iran talks.
