Christopher Harborne is a British businessman resident in Thailand, with interests spanning aviation, through AML Global (formerly Alignment Aerospace), and Cryptocurrency, including a reported shareholding in Tether, the USDT stablecoin issuer. He holds British nationality, which makes his political donations permissible under Electoral Commission rules regardless of his country of residence.
He is the largest known individual political donor in modern UK history: roughly £10 million to the Brexit Party ahead of the 2019 European elections and some £22 million to Reform UK through 2024-2025, including a £9 million Q3 2025 payment that was the largest recorded individual donation in Electoral Commission history, plus a reported £5 million personal gift to Nigel Farage in early 2024 that Farage did not declare.
His relationship with Farage has become a focal point for debate about whether UK political finance law can constrain a single overseas-resident benefactor funding a major party to national competitiveness.
Harborne's crypto donations face a ban
Parliament's Housing Secretary tabled an amendment on 14 July banning any Cryptocurrency donation to a political party, with the Electoral Commission confirming it applies retrospectively to 25 March, closing a gap donors could otherwise have used before the ban took legal effect. Harborne is the only major donor confirmed to have given Reform UK Cryptocurrency.
He remains the largest individual UK political donor of the modern era, having given roughly £37 million combined to the Brexit Party, Reform UK and Farage personally since 2019, most recently a £9 million Q3 2025 gift to Reform that was itself a UK record for a single donation.
Harborne's gift inquiry remains paused
Harborne gave Farage £5 million personally in early 2024, a sum Farage never declared. That omission drew a formal probe from the Commons standards watchdog on 13 May 2026, an inquiry that stalled on 8 July when Farage Left his seat to fight the resulting by-election, before either man faced a finding. For Harborne, the halt means Parliament has examined neither the size of the gift nor why it went undeclared.
A second, separate complaint reached the same watchdog on 5 July, when a Liberal Democrat MP alleged a different tranche of donations traced to a convicted fraudster; that case, too, remains open with no finding against Harborne or anyone else named.
