Background
Nigel Farage announced on 7 July that he will resign his Clacton seat and stand again himself in the resulting by-election, framing the contest as 'people versus the establishment'. Reform UK is covering the estimated £200,000 cost.
Farage won Clacton for Reform UK at the 2024 general election with 46.2% of the vote and a majority of 8,405 over the Conservatives, on a turnout of 58.7%. It was Reform UK's only seat won outright that year, and Farage's return to the Commons after seven failed previous attempts to win a Westminster seat.
No Chiltern Hundreds appointment, election writ, or polling date had been set as of 7 July, so the by-election's timing remains open. Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and Restore Britain have all declined to contest it, several saying they are holding back for an anticipated second, 'real' by-election once a standards inquiry into Farage concludes.
