Iran Conflict 2026: Torpedoes kill an Indian wiper off OmanBackground
Cape Dao is a capesize bulk carrier, IMO 9219020, built in 2002 and registered in Antigua and Barbuda. It carries 170,089 tonnes deadweight. The registered owner is Forthmarin Corp Ltd and the manager is Peonies Shipmanagement FZE, in the United Arab Emirates. The ship sailed as Cape Qingdao until 2022 and as Bluemoon until 2011; the IMO number never changed.
Two torpedoes hit its port side on 23 September 2026, one in the accommodation block and one in the hull near the engine room. The accommodation strike killed Suraj Yadav, a wiper from Uttar Pradesh and the most junior rating aboard. Of the 28 aboard, 20 were Indian; 19 of those survived and were taken off by Oman's Royal Navy. Cape Dao had loaded at Mina Saqr and was bound for India.
No party has claimed the attack, so Yadav falls outside the one count that can be cited. On 10 September 2026 the International Maritime Organization had closed its confirmed register at 22 seafarer deaths, thirteen days before he was killed. A death enters that count through the flag state and the shipowner, and both need an attributable incident to file against.
