CuspAI pools 45 partners' labs and compute

2 min read

CuspAI launched an AI Materials Foundry on 20 July, a coalition it says pools data, labs and compute across more than 45 founding partners. At Farnborough the same day, the British Business Bank proposed a £100m debt fund for aerospace suppliers, co-designed with Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GKN. Britain's Sovereign AI Unit turns up on a CuspAI cap table we reported it was absent from. The seed tier got nothing from either.

Key takeaway

Britain's state capital keeps arriving as a minority ticket after foreign investors set the price, while seed tier gets nothing.

CuspAI named 45-plus partners on Monday for a Coalition it calls the AI Materials Foundry, including Nvidia, Samsung and Applied Materials, alongside a $450m round at a $2.6bn valuation.

The partners supply the furnaces and fabrication lines CuspAI's software cannot replace, but none has said what membership actually commits them to build.

CuspAI's 20 July announcement names Britain's Sovereign AI Unit among its new investors. On 4 July we published that the round had closed with no UK state vehicle on it.

CuspAI's 20 July announcement names Britain's Sovereign AI Unit and the Dutch state vehicle Invest-NL as new investors. On 4 July, Lowdown reported the same round had closed with no UK state vehicle on the cap table at all.

Both statements cannot be right about one closed round, and nobody has said which was wrong. The Unit's stake, £5m to £10m against roughly £338m, is small either way.

Louis Taylor used the Farnborough airshow to propose a £100m loan book for UK aerospace suppliers, co-designed with the primes those suppliers sell to.

The British Business Bank proposed a £100m loan fund for UK aerospace suppliers at the Farnborough Airshow on 20 July, co-designed with Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GKN Aerospace and trade body ADS.

It is the Bank's first debt fund this cycle; every prior vehicle tracked here was an equity stake. The structure is still to be finalised, and no supplier has been named as a first borrower.

Risk Ledger closed a £24m Series B on Wednesday 15 July led by Axiom Equity, with Mercia Ventures participating and no public vehicle anywhere on the cap table.

Risk Ledger, a London cybersecurity firm, closed a £24m Series B on 15 July led by Axiom Equity, with Mercia Ventures also investing. No sovereign fund or Bank vehicle appears on the cap table.

It was the week's one clean private round, but the week's total funding still fell. Nine UK rounds between 13 and 17 July raised £107.85m, down 55% on the week before.

Innovate UK closed its Createch competition on Monday 20 July and opened Advanced Connectivity Technologies five days earlier, at a fraction of the spring ticket size.

Innovate UK closed its Createch competition on 20 July, sharing up to £10m for industrial digital platforms, and opened Advanced Connectivity Technologies five days earlier, offering up to £500,000 with a 9 September deadline.

Neither has reached trade press yet. Together they show the agency's April switch to a portfolio model still keeps a predictable funding calendar, just at a smaller ticket size than the spring round of competitions.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan told City A.M. Britain wants "global AI leadership, not Silicon Valley emulation". Quantexa's John Harms answered that hardware without governance control is lock-in with extra steps.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan told City A.M. on 15 July that Britain wants global AI leadership, not to copy Silicon Valley. Quantexa's John Harms replied that sovereignty needs governance control and data portability, not just UK-based hardware.

Harms's test cuts close to home. The Sovereign AI Unit's own small stake in CuspAI this week bought presence, not governance control, which is the exact gap he was describing.

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee took oral evidence from UKRI chief executive Sir Ian Chapman on 14 July, on the agency's approach to funding. UKRI is expected to publish a new strategy shortly.

The session came five days after UKRI confirmed a 58% cut to STFC's national laboratories. We have the committee's listing, not a transcript, so no answers from the hearing are reported here.

Different Perspectives
British Business Bank
British Business Bank
British Business Bank proposed a £100m debt fund for aerospace suppliers at Farnborough on 20 July, co-designed with Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GKN Aerospace. It is the Bank's first non-equity instrument this cycle, aimed at suppliers who can service a loan but have no equity story, though the structure remains unfinalised.
Kleiner Perkins and Bezos Expeditions
Kleiner Perkins and Bezos Expeditions
Kleiner Perkins and Bezos Expeditions co-led CuspAI's $450m Series B at a $2.6bn valuation, a figure Lowdown has now reported three times since June. Silicon Valley and a family office, not a UK investor, set the price of Britain's highest-profile materials-AI company.
Invest-NL
Invest-NL
Invest-NL joined CuspAI's $450m round as a new state investor alongside Britain's Sovereign AI Unit, named in the company's own 20 July announcement. Any framing of British state capital arriving must also credit Dutch capital with the same access, since Invest-NL took the opportunity too.
EQT
EQT
EQT was reported on 3 July to be in advanced talks for a further CuspAI stake on behalf of the EU's Scaleup Europe Fund, but does not appear on the round CuspAI closed. Whether Europe's own sovereign vehicle secured a position, was outbid, or withdrew is unresolved.
