UK Startups and Innovation: Lords question UKRI chief on fundingBackground
Sir Ian Chapman, chief executive of UK Research and Innovation, gave oral evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday 14 July 2026 on the agency's funding approach, with a new strategy expected shortly.
UKRI is the UK's principal public funder of research and innovation, and as its chief executive Chapman oversees how that funding is allocated across the research councils and Innovate UK.
His appearance before the Lords committee placed UKRI's funding approach under direct parliamentary scrutiny in a week that also saw fresh funding moves from the British Business Bank and Innovate UK, part of a wider conversation about the shape of UK public research investment.
