Key takeaway

France ordered Harmattan AI's ramming interceptors a day after trials ended, with more tranches in reserve.

France's procurement agency, the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), sent Harmattan AI its first order for GOBI Zephyr interceptor drones on 23 September, a day after a two-month trial ended, according to the DGA's deputy director general Alexandre Lahousse1. Harmattan AI is a French start-up. The first 50 interceptors reach French forces from October, and further tranches of the same size are held in reserve.

Each GOBI Zephyr weighs 2.2kg, flies at up to 350km/h and destroys a small drone by flying into it. It carries no warhead, so an interceptor that misses has nothing to detonate over French troops or a town below.

In June the DGA bought Latvian BLAZE interceptors from Origin Robotics after a competitive evaluation. France therefore now holds two ramming interceptors from two countries, each chosen after a test. Holding tranches in reserve lets the DGA order more Zephyrs without a new contract if the first batch performs in service.

Deep Analysis

In plain English

Small attack drones are cheap, and shooting them down with missiles costs far more than the drones themselves. Armies now want cheaper ways to stop them. One answer is an interceptor: a small, very fast drone that hunts an enemy drone and flies straight into it. France has ordered its first batch of 50 from Harmattan AI, a young French company, after two months of testing. The interceptor carries no explosives, so if it misses, nothing blows up over the people below.

Deep Analysis
Root Causes

A warhead-free interceptor solves a domestic problem as well as a military one. French forces defend bases, convoys and towns, and an interceptor that misses has nothing to detonate over the people below, which eases its use at home.

Cheap attack drones have also broken the old cost ratio, in which a defender fired a missile worth far more than its target. A small rammer brings the cost per kill closer to the cost of the drone it destroys, which is why European buyers now order interceptors in batches rather than missiles.

What could happen next?
  • Precedent

A trial-to-order gap of one day sets a benchmark that other European procurement agencies will be measured against.

  • Opportunity

A first French order gives Harmattan AI a reference customer for export sales of the Zephyr.

The Conservative opposition called on the Government on 9 August to 'urgently audit' equipment for hidden Chinese components, after the Telegraph's K3 SCOUT report. No named MP has been quoted on the record; the call came at party level, alongside the Ministry of Defence's own 10 August statement that no data had been compromised.

Kraken Technology Group is a UK maritime-defence company based in Portsmouth that builds the K3 SCOUT, and crossed a $1bn valuation in July on a single-sourced $175m raise. Responses on the Platform Authority close 19 August, ten days after the cameras were found transmitting to China.
