Drones: Industry & DefenceBackground
Harmattan AI is a Paris-based defence technology company developing autonomous drones for interception, surveillance, strike work and training. Harmattan AI builds the GOBI family for short-range air defence, while SONORA supports force training. Reporting from September 2026 identified the company as a start-up less than two years old when France ordered Zephyr interceptors.
Its product range gives Harmattan AI routes into military procurement beyond a single interceptor programme. In September 2026, a British Army supply arrangement through Brigantes Consulting included 110 SONORA training drones within a 1,025-drone Project Rapstone purchase. The French Zephyr order followed a two-month trial, showing that Harmattan AI's products can move through formal military testing into procurement.
Harmattan AI enters French service
On 23 September, France's arms procurement agency ordered Harmattan AI's first 50 GOBI Zephyr interceptor drones, one day after a two-month trial ended. The first batch was due to reach French forces from October, giving the Paris company its first French state order.
In the September 2026 order, Harmattan AI moved its GOBI line from trial work to a service purchase. Each 2.2kg Zephyr is designed to ram a target at speeds of up to 350km/h, placing Harmattan AI in France's short-range air-defence market.
