Did Iran launch the April 2024 attack from Shahid Nojeh?
Background
Shahid Nojeh sits roughly 50 kilometres east of Hamedan city in western Iran, making it one of the Iranian Air Force's westernmost major installations. It hosts fighter aircraft and served as a staging point for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-coordinated April 2024 operation involving hundreds of drones and Ballistic Missiles. Its location gives it reach toward both Iraq and Turkey.
Shahid Nojeh became a primary Israel Defense Forces (IDF) target in March 2026 when IDF concentrated sustained strikes on Hamedan province, hitting more than 200 targets including command centres, air defence systems, and weapons storage. The base was identified as one of the launch sites for Iran's April 2024 ballistic missile and drone barrage against Israel. A wider wave that followed hit 200+ further targets across western and central Iran, including missile storage, drone facilities, and Iranian Air Defence systems.
The base's role in the 2024 attack made it a high-priority target. For Israel, neutralising it removes the infrastructure that enabled that strike; for Iran, losing it degrades its ability to project air power westward. Whether sustained IDF bombardment has permanently degraded Shahid Nojeh's operational capacity remains the central open question.
