Pantelleria is a small Italian island in the Sicilian Channel between Sicily and Tunisia. The waters west of the island saw that stop unfold on 2 August 2026: the Cameroon-flagged, EU-sanctioned tanker Toa Payoh was intercepted by the Italian frigate Thaon di Revel, a Greek warship and Polish patrol aircraft offshore in support, part of Operation IRINI's Mediterranean mandate.
Toa Payoh's captain declined to hand over documentation, and Italy had confirmed no formal detention as of that date. The island's location astride central Mediterranean shipping lanes running between the Suez Canal and Gibraltar makes its surrounding waters a natural checkpoint for enforcement action against vessels suspected of carrying sanctioned Russian oil.
