Background

Munich is the capital of Bavaria and Germany's third-largest city, with about 1.5 million people and a recorded history from 1158. It anchors one of Europe's wealthiest regional economies: Siemens, BMW, MAN, Allianz and Munich Re are all based there. The city hosts the annual Munich Security Conference and Oktoberfest, the world's largest Volksfest.

It is also a leading German centre for defence technology. Helsing, Quantum Systems and ARX Robotics have their headquarters in the city, and the Technical University of Munich feeds a start-up scene of about 500 technology companies. Foreign producers have followed: on 20 May 2026 Perennial Autonomy announced a Munich production line for its Merops interceptor drone, letting European allies buy it without routing orders through the United States.

That combination of industrial base, university talent, venture money and a security-policy forum makes Munich the place where Germany's rearmament meets its technology sector. Its firms are building for Ukraine as well as the Bundeswehr, from combat software to uncrewed ground vehicles.

Its robot makers reach Ukraine

Munich is home to ARX Robotics, one of the firms carrying Europe's ground-robot industry towards Ukraine. On 25 June 2026 ARX and Ukraine's Roboneers founded a joint venture, ARX Industries, in Gdansk to build the Rys Pro modular robot in both Germany and Ukraine, with stated year-one capacity of several thousand units.

The first hardware followed on 29 September, when ARX and the engine maker DEUTZ delivered GEREON ground robots to Ukraine, 12 weeks after production began in Ulm. ARX made four announcements in four weeks, covering Poland, Britain and the Roboneers partnership. None gave a quantity or a price, so the Munich firm's output remains unpublished.

Defence finance

Drone capital concentrates in the city

Munich's best-funded defence-technology firms both raised money at higher valuations in 2026. In May 2026 Helsing, whose combat-AI software runs on Ukrainian front lines, closed a round led by the US firm Dragoneer that valued it at $18bn. On 2 July Quantum Systems, the Munich drone maker, reportedly raised $1.2bn at an $8bn valuation, co-led by Blackstone, Noteus, Airbus and Advent, more than doubling its prior mark.

The money followed Germany's framework contracts worth more than €840m across three drone makers, of which Helsing holds a share. For Munich the result is a cluster of well-funded defence firms whose valuations now set the benchmark for European rivals raising capital.
