Background
Evergreen Marine Corporation is a Taiwan-based container shipping company founded in 1968 by Chang Yung-fa and headquartered in Luzhu, Taoyuan. It is one of the world's five largest container carriers, operating a fleet of more than 200 vessels across global trade routes and listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (ticker 2603). The Evergreen Group encompasses shipping, aviation, hotels, and logistics.
Evergreen's container ship M/V Ever Lovely was struck by an IRGC one-way attack drone on 25 June 2026 while transiting the IMO evacuation corridor in the Oman approaches to the Strait of Hormuz. No crew were killed and the vessel sailed on, but the strike triggered the first US airstrike on Iran since the Islamabad MOU and the suspension of the IMO corridor by the Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
Evergreen has now featured in two landmark maritime disruptions within five years: the 2021 Ever Given grounding that blocked the Suez Canal for six days and disrupted global supply chains, and the 2026 Ever Lovely drone strike at the Hormuz chokepoint. Both incidents illustrated the outsized geopolitical and commercial consequences that flow from incidents involving major container carriers at strategic waterways.
