Weathernews Inc. is a Japanese weather forecasting company founded on 11 June 1986 and headquartered at Makuhari in Chiba. It serves Marine, aviation and land clients, and its Marine business sells optimum ship routing, which plans voyages around weather to cut fuel use. The company reports 31 offices in 21 countries and describes itself as the largest privately owned weather company in the world.
In August 2026 it joined the classification society ClassNK, the container line Evergreen Marine and the shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries in a memorandum for a crewed commercial-vessel navigation trial. Its role is to supply navigation and weather data. The agreement describes a test, not an autonomous voyage, and the record gives no vessel name, trial date or measured result.
That role places Weathernews on the data side of ship autonomy. Routing software and weather feeds are inputs any automated navigation system needs, whether or not a CREW stays aboard, so the company can take part in autonomy trials without building vessels or control systems itself.
