Iran Conflict 2026Background
Damietta is a port city on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, at the mouth of the Nile's Damietta branch, roughly 70 kilometres west of Port Said and 200 kilometres north of Cairo. It handles containers, general cargo, grain and fertiliser, and its gas terminal sits close to the Mediterranean approach to the Suez Canal.
Because Suez is the reroute for cargo that can no longer transit the Strait of Hormuz, Damietta sits at the Mediterranean end of that alternate corridor, giving any disruption there knock-on effects for traffic already diverted away from the Gulf. That logistical position, rather than any prior role in the conflict, is what put an Egyptian civilian terminal inside a war it had no stake in starting.
