Brandon Tegtmeier

Brandon Tegtmeier is a US Army major general and commanding officer of the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. The 82nd is the Army primary airborne rapid-deployment force; its Immediate Response Force is capable of fielding roughly 3,000 paratroopers within 18 hours of a deployment order.

In March 2026, the Pentagon ordered Tegtmeier and the division headquarters to the Middle East as the Iran conflict escalated . Approximately 1,000 to 2,000 additional paratroopers began preparing to follow, joining two Marine Expeditionary Units already in theatre and placing 6,000 to 8,000 US ground troops in proximity to Iran .

Pentagon sources disclosed active planning for a possible seizure of Kharg Island, which handles 90% of Iran oil exports, with airborne forces envisaged following US Marines ashore once engineers repaired the island damaged airstrip . Whether Tegtmeier and the 82nd ultimately execute that mission remains the central open question around his deployment.
