UKHSA (the UK Health Security Agency) has confirmed 207 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis t5.9411 as of 13 August, with illness onset dates running from 11 August 2025 to 1 August 2026 1. All but one fell in 2026. England holds 199, Scotland six, Wales one and Northern Ireland one.

Whole-genome sequencing puts every isolate within five SNPs, single-nucleotide polymorphisms, of the others. Salmonella accumulates mutations at a roughly clock-like rate, so five differences across twelve months of sampling is close to no divergence at all: not 207 unrelated people WHO ate a bad egg, but one contaminated stream feeding a plate at a time.

The interviews point where the sequencing cannot. Of 114 people asked, 95 had eaten food prepared outside the home, and egg consumption is the strongest signal UKHSA has 2. Food eaten out is the hardest exposure to trace, because a caterer buys pooled liquid or shell eggs from a wholesaler WHO buys from several packers, and the label the diner never saw is the only thing tying the plate to a farm. Investigators have found no link to UK-produced eggs or poultry, which by elimination points at an import route nobody has followed to its source. Two caveats hold: the 38% hospitalisation rate covers only cases with data recorded, and interview answers are recalled weeks after the meal.

Severity runs high for this organism, with two bloodstream infections and one death among the 207. The investigation ends one of two ways: UKHSA names a supply chain, or the case count stops rising and the source is never found, which is the more common outcome for a catering-route outbreak with no product left to sample.

ECDC (the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) reported a separate widening on 21 August, listing Dermatophilus congolensis infections in ten European countries as at 20 August, up from the six it recorded in June 3. ECDC added Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom over that period. The organism was a livestock pathogen until this year, and ECDC now describes two human settings: close contact among gay, bisexual and other men WHO have sex with men, and contact sports and martial arts, including cases linked to travel in South-East Asia. Sequences from 31 isolates across seven countries are closely related, though ECDC cannot yet verify individual transmission chains from them. Its own report gives 123 cases in the detailed section and 126 in the executive summary, without explaining the gap.
