Northern Ireland has a population of roughly 1.9 million across some 14,000 km² in the northeast of the island of Ireland, with Belfast as its capital. It shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland and is separated from Great Britain by the North Channel.
Its institutions are the product of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which ended decades of conflict known as the Troubles by requiring Sinn Féin and the Democratic Unionist Party to run devolved government at Stormont jointly rather than as government and opposition. That structural dependence on both parties came under public strain on 31 July 2026 amid a Treasury funding dispute over public-service money, with each side blaming the other for the executive's fragility.
In football, Northern Ireland fields its own international side through the Irish Football Association, distinct from the Republic of Ireland's TEAM. Its most celebrated World Cup run came in 1958, when it reached the quarter-finals in Sweden, and its Euro 2016 campaign, in which it qualified for the Round of 16 as a third-placed group finisher, is cited as a small-nation benchmark for how expanded tournament formats can reward third place.
