Japan has signed to buy Ukrainian interceptor drones from a maker outside its own contest. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said on 9 October that the Japan Ministry of Defense "has already concluded an acquisition contract for interceptor drones made by Ukraine's SkyFall" and is working towards early delivery12.
Former defence minister Itsunori Onodera had said on 1 October that the purchase was a trial. The ministry has not disclosed the model, quantity or price. SkyFall was not among the four interceptors the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA), Japan's defence procurement agency, tested over the summer3.
The buy sits beside larger drone spending: in August the ministry requested ¥292.2bn for 17 MQ-9B SeaGuardian maritime surveillance drones.
