Ukhta is the second-largest city of Russia's Komi Republic, with about 98,000 people at the 2021 census. It is home to the Ukhta refinery, run by Lukoil-Ukhtaneftepererabotka, a Lukoil subsidiary, which Ukraine struck in October 2026.
The city lies about 1,900 km from Ukraine's border, FAR to Russia's north. Its refinery joined a target list that Kyiv says aims to damage the Russian economy, a goal Vladimir Putin conceded on 1 October had been partially met.
The Ukhta strike shows that Ukrainian long-range drones can now reach plants in Russia's FAR north as well as its east. It was hit in the same week as the Omsk refinery, while Washington pressed Kyiv to stop.
Ukhta's refinery came within drone reach
Ukhta entered Ukraine's long-range campaign in The Week of 5-9 October 2026. On 9 October Zelenskyy confirmed a strike on the city's Lukoil refinery, 1,900 km from the border, in the same days as a strike on Omsk.
Bloomberg counted four Russian refineries struck between 5 and 9 October, while Washington pressed Kyiv to stop. Ukhta added a northern plant to a campaign that Kyiv said on 4 October had already idled 51% of Russian refining, an unverified figure. For a northern industrial city a long way from any front, the strike ended distance as a defence.
