Sotomayor has been an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court since August 2009, nominated by President Barack Obama. Born in the Bronx in 1954, she studied at Princeton and Yale Law School, worked as a Manhattan prosecutor and in private practice, then served as a federal district judge in New York from 1992 and on the Second Circuit until her elevation.
She sits in the Court's three-member liberal minority, alongside Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, and in the 2026 election cycle that bloc has dissented together from emergency orders shaping how votes are cast and counted. On 2 June she dissented when the six Conservative justices let Alabama use its contested post-Callais congressional map for 2026.
On 25 September she joined Jackson's dissent from the order letting Homeland Security restart bulk searches of its SAVE citizenship database. The limits on those checks before an election return to the Court for argument on 8 December.
