Background
Born is a municipality in the province of Limburg in the southern Netherlands, situated on the River Meuse approximately 10 kilometres north of Maastricht. It is part of the Sittard-Geleen municipality and lies within a historically industrial corridor associated with coal mining and petrochemicals.
Born is the site of the VDL Defentec facility that opened the first THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle production line outside Milrem Robotics' Estonian factory in June 2026. The Dutch government contracted VDL Defentec to assemble more than 100 THeMIS units at Born for delivery to Ukraine, with the first units handed over around 4 June 2026. The facility is configured as a flexible final-assembly line designed to scale production rapidly in response to demand. Born's selection reflects the VDL Group's existing industrial footprint in the southern Netherlands rather than any prior defence-specific infrastructure.
