Mediterranean Shipping Company became one of the most prominent corporate casualties of the Iran conflict. In April 2026, the IRGC Navy seized the MSC Francesca (Panama-flagged) in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing it of 'belonging to Israel' — the first ship seizure by Iranian forces since the war began. Iranian state media used the seizure as a pretext, though MSC publicly denied any Israeli connection. MSC Francesca remained under IRGC control as of late June. In June 2026, the container ship MSC Sariska V was holed by an unidentified projectile in the Persian Gulf during the US-enforced blockade phase, becoming the third named commercial vessel struck in the conflict after the Olympic Life and the Lian Star.

Founded in 1970 in Naples by Gianluigi Aponte, MSC is headquartered in Geneva and operates roughly 760 container ships with a capacity exceeding 5.7 million TEU, making it the world's largest container line by fleet capacity since 2022. The company is privately held by the Aponte family and is active across 155 countries. MSC had been among the lines that halted Hormuz transits in early March along with CMA CGM, Maersk, and Hapag-Lloyd as the P&I cover withdrawal made the passage commercially uninsurable.

The MSC Francesca seizure and MSC Sariska V strike together represent the highest direct losses suffered by any single container line in the conflict. Despite this, the company reportedly made at least one transit through the strait in the post-MOU period, with the MSC Qingdao cited in briefing materials as a confidence-transit vessel in late June — a signal that the world's largest carrier was testing the settlement's durability.
