Background

The Kyiv Post is an English-language newspaper based in Kyiv, founded in 1995 and the oldest of its kind in Ukraine. It has covered the country's politics and economy for international readers through the Orange Revolution, the 2014 Maidan uprising and Russia's full-scale invasion from February 2022.

Adnan Kivan, a Ukrainian-Syrian businessman, has owned the paper since 2018. Former staff founded a rival English-language outlet, the Kyiv Independent, in 2021, and both titles now report under Ukraine's wartime security constraints on military detail.

Its value to outside readers lies in access inside Ukraine on energy, economic and security stories. In April 2026 it reported on the Security Service drone campaign that hit crude tanks at Samara, the Tuapse refinery and a Druzhba pumping station near Nizhny Novgorod, days after Ukraine had restored the pipeline's flow to Hungary. That reporting Fed coverage of how Kyiv used the same pipeline both to unlock the EU's €90bn loan and to pressure Moscow.
