Russia-Ukraine War 2026Background
Kupiansk is a city on the Oskil River in Ukraine's Kharkiv Oblast, the centre of Kupiansk Raion and an important rail junction for the region. DeepState, the Ukrainian mapping group, said in October 2026 that changes around Kupiansk which it had published late dated back to May, held back for operational security.
Control of the city has been disputed for nearly a year. Russia's Defence Ministry announced its full capture on 20 November 2025, which the Ukrainian military denied. In February 2026 Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for Ukraine's Joint Forces grouping, said Ukrainian forces held confident control of the city, with a few dozen Russian troops left in one district, Euromaidan Press reported.
Russia's Defence Ministry said in September 2025 that taking Kupiansk would HELP its push toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, which lie to the south. That delay, part of a DeepState revision that more than tripled its count of Russia's summer gains, shows how slowly an accurate picture of the Kupiansk sector emerges.
