Greg Abbott is Governor of Texas. On 3 August 2026 he directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas and ERCOT to Conduct a comprehensive audit of every data-centre project moving through ERCOT's interconnection queue, covering ownership, public incentives, water and power use, and community impact .
The order came as ERCOT's connection-request queue reached roughly 474 GW, more than five times the state's record peak demand, with about 90% of that load from data centres. Abbott's letter, addressed to PUCT chair Thomas Gleeson and ERCOT chief executive Pablo Vegas, said noncompliant projects should be denied grid access .
The directive forced ERCOT to suspend its own Batch Zero classification Deadline and seek a waiver from the PUCT, freezing the state's main mechanism for sorting real demand from speculative reservations. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller called the order vague and is pushing for a special legislative session instead.
