Background
Adobe Inc. is the US software company behind Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and the Creative Cloud subscription suite. Founded in 1982 in San Jose, California, and listed on Nasdaq (ticker: ADBE), Adobe pivoted to subscription software in 2013 with Creative Cloud, which now generates nearly all its revenue. The company pursued an acquisition of Figma in 2023-2024 before abandoning the deal after EU and UK antitrust objections. Adobe's Firefly generative AI family was introduced in 2023, initially in Photoshop and Illustrator, with the company emphasising that Firefly is trained exclusively on licensed content and Adobe Stock assets, positioning it as a commercially SAFE alternative to competitors whose training data provenance is contested.
On 15 April 2026, Adobe launched Firefly AI Assistant inside Premiere Pro, the first NLE-native agentic creative agent from a major incumbent editing software vendor, able to execute complex multi-step editing tasks via natural-language instruction within the timeline. The launch came one day before Avid announced Gemini integration at NAB Show, marking a 24-hour window in which both dominant professional NLEs committed to embedded AI. By May 2026 Adobe had extended its reach further, launching a creativity connector at Google I/O 2026 on 20 May that makes 50+ professional tools including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and Express callable directly inside Gemini via the Connected Apps framework. Adobe is simultaneously an IBC ecosystem participant and a tools incumbent deepening its proprietary AI layer, positioning Firefly in Premiere Pro as the editorial-suite baseline that live broadcast stacks and agentic ad products build on top of. The Lenovo World Cup AI broadcast stack references the vendor-layer logic that both Adobe (timeline) and Avid (NLE) established in April 2026.
