Background

Gemini is Google DeepMind's multimodal large language model family, announced in December 2023 as Google's successor to the PALM model family, and released in multiple capability tiers: Ultra, Pro, Flash and Nano. It is developed by Google DeepMind, the AI research division formed in 2023 from the merger of Google Brain and DeepMind, and is designed to reason across text, images, video and audio.

Enterprise access is provided through Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform, with Gemini Pro and Flash the most widely deployed tiers, while consumer access runs through Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail) under the "Gemini for Workspace" brand, extending its reach beyond developers to everyday office users.

Gemini's tight bundling into Google's own platforms, Android, Search and Workspace, is now also its principal regulatory liability: European authorities treat Gemini's default placement, rather than its underlying capability, as the competitive advantage worth constraining.

Key Issues
Android AI mandate

Brussels forces Android open to rivals

For an assistant that has grown by riding inside Google's own operating system, 16 July 2026 removed the exclusivity that made that ride worthwhile: the Commission ordered 11 Android features opened to rival AI providers on equal terms, ending Gemini's reserved access to them. Ecosia said the accompanying remedy could take it from answering two-thirds of queries to all of them, a rival gain that comes directly at Gemini's expense inside Google's own search surface.

The order followed a 25 May warning that Brussels was preparing a separate fine over Gemini's promotion above rivals in Search. For Gemini specifically, both actions attack the same asset: not its underlying capability, but its automatic, unearned front-row seat on a billion Android devices.

Broadcast AI integration

Gemini embeds into broadcast editing

On 16 April 2026 at NAB Show, Avid and Google Cloud signed a multi-year deal embedding Gemini and Vertex AI inside Media Composer, the video-editing system that handles broadcast output at most major Western broadcasters, adding automated logging and B-roll generation. Adobe answered a day earlier with its own Firefly assistant inside Premiere Pro.

At Google I/O between 19 and 21 May, Gemini gained callable access to Canva, Adobe's Creative Cloud tools and ByteDance's CapCut, letting a single Gemini prompt dispatch tasks across all three. Each tool absorbed into that list moves further from being the app a media team opens first.

Why did the EU order Google to open Android to rival AI assistants?
On 16 July 2026 the European Commission adopted Digital Markets Act Article 6(7) decisions requiring Google to give third-party AI providers free interoperability with 11 Android features, rather than keeping that access exclusive to Gemini, and to share anonymised Search ranking data with rivals on FRAND terms from January 2027.Source: Lowdown
