Iranian armed forces General Mohammad Bagherzadeh said on 16 August that Qatari forces captured three Iranian pilots alive after their Su-24 jets came down during the war, naming them as Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian and Omran Behraveshian, and saying the three have been held for six months with no contact with their families 1. The account reaches the record through a single outlet, the Times of Israel, relaying the general's statement. Qatar's foreign ministry denies holding any pilots. It says the aircraft entered Qatari airspace and did not answer contact, that search and rescue teams recovered the remains of one pilot, and that it has invited Iran to review the details of a handover, an invitation Tehran has not answered.
Both aircraft appear on our own record from March. Qatar's air force shot down two Iranian Su-24s on Monday 2 March, alongside seven ballistic missiles and five drones, in what was believed to be the first destruction of Iranian military aircraft by a Gulf state . The interval from that engagement to Bagherzadeh's statement is five and a half months, close enough to the six he cites. A Su-24 flies with a crew of two, so two aircraft put four men in the air; Iran names three and Qatar accounts for one set of remains. That arithmetic is ours and neither government has stated it, but the two claims are not obviously irreconcilable on the numbers. They collide on custody: Bagherzadeh puts three men alive in Qatari hands, and Doha says it holds nobody at all.
What makes this more than a prisoner dispute is who Qatar currently is to Iran. Abbas Araghchi named Doha a day earlier as one of two channels carrying Iranian messages to Washington. A mediator that contradicts an Iranian general in public about the fate of Iranian aircrew is a mediator both sides have a fresh reason to distrust, and the mediation is the only thing moving while the negotiating tracks are frozen. Neither claim can be tested from outside: Iran offers three names and no evidence of custody, Qatar offers a denial and an unanswered invitation.
