France's procurement agency, the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), sent Harmattan AI its first order for GOBI Zephyr interceptor drones on 23 September, a day after a two-month trial ended, according to the DGA's deputy director general Alexandre Lahousse1. Harmattan AI is a French start-up. The first 50 interceptors reach French forces from October, and further tranches of the same size are held in reserve.
Each GOBI Zephyr weighs 2.2kg, flies at up to 350km/h and destroys a small drone by flying into it. It carries no warhead, so an interceptor that misses has nothing to detonate over French troops or a town below.
In June the DGA bought Latvian BLAZE interceptors from Origin Robotics after a competitive evaluation. France therefore now holds two ramming interceptors from two countries, each chosen after a test. Holding tranches in reserve lets the DGA order more Zephyrs without a new contract if the first batch performs in service.
