LNG stands for liquefied natural gas, which is gas cooled to minus 162 degrees Celsius so it can be loaded onto specialist tankers and shipped anywhere in the world. The main buyers of LNG are in Asia, particularly Japan, South Korea, and China. The JKM (Japan-Korea Marker) is the price buyers in Northeast Asia pay for LNG. The TTF is the price Europeans pay. When Asia pays more than Europe, LNG tankers head east. When Europe pays more, they head west. Right now the JKM-TTF gap is $1.225 per unit. That sounds like Asia is paying more, but after the cost of the 20-day voyage, the extra profit for a tanker owner routing to Asia has shrunk to almost nothing. With Atlantic charter rates below $100,000/day and the Panama route adding roughly 20 days over the Cape route, the net economics for a US-origin cargo diverted from Europe to Asia now return less than $0.30/MMBtu after voyage costs, compared to $1.80/MMBtu in late April. The cargo-diversion incentive has effectively collapsed to within noise of breakeven.

Counter-view: Kpler's LNG flow analysis team notes that the JKM-TTF spread compression has not yet produced observable cargo redirection back to Europe. The majority of LNG cargoes, roughly 70% of global volumes, are on long-term oil-indexed contracts that route to contracted destinations regardless of the spot spread. The free-floating 30% is where $1.225 matters; the headline volume response may lag the price signal by 4-6 weeks.
