University of Edinburgh received its royal Charter in 1582 and opened its doors in 1583, making it one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world; roughly 39,000 students were enrolled in 2024/25. Its Roslin Institute, which cloned Dolly the sheep in 1996, anchors a long-standing biotechnology research base, and the university is a partner in the Rosalind Franklin Institute's national life-sciences consortium.
The university's Data-Driven Innovation initiative, funded through the £1.3 billion Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, built innovation hubs including the Bayes Centre and Edinburgh Futures Institute, positioning the university as a source of spinout companies alongside its research base.
Two of its spinouts closed funding rounds within weeks of each other in 2026. Expanse is the newest addition to that student-venture record: its founders, still undergraduates when they set the company up under twelve months before, closed a $5.3 million seed round on 16 September for software forecasting machine-learning compute needs , while Singular Photonics, its single-photon image sensor spinout, had already raised £1.6 million in the week to 21 August .
