Rosalind Franklin Institute received £67.7 million on 14 September 2026, its share of a UK Research and Innovation package that also funded the Henry Royce Institute, to expand shared kit across its five life-sciences research themes.

Rosalind Franklin Institute launched in 2018, officially opening in 2021, from the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Didcot, Oxfordshire. An initial £103 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council seeded the institute, which operates as a consortium of twelve partner institutions, including the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Diamond Light Source, and universities spanning Birmingham, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Imperial College London, King's College London, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford, Southampton and University College London.
Franklin's work spans five scientific themes: artificial intelligence, biological mass spectrometry, correlated imaging, next-generation chemistry and structural biology, aimed at disruptive technologies for health and life sciences, including chronic disease.
The September funding lands as a further injection into the shared-equipment model that underpins Franklin's consortium structure, letting partner universities and companies access instruments none could afford to build alone . Franklin's smaller slice of the package, against the Royce Institute's larger share, reflects the relative scale of the two institutes rather than any change to its own REMIT.
