South Wales
Region of southern Wales and home to Britain's largest armoured vehicle plant
South Wales builds the British Army's Ajax armoured vehicles, at General Dynamics Land Systems UK's Merthyr Tydfil works, Britain's largest armoured vehicle plant, and at Oakdale. A 16 September 2026 agreement placed final assembly of HECTOR robot wingmen for Ajax there too.

South Wales is home to Britain's largest active armoured vehicle plant. General Dynamics Land Systems UK delivers the Ajax programme from Merthyr Tydfil and Oakdale. Its 57-acre Merthyr site, opened in 2016 in a former forklift truck factory, builds the 589 vehicles of the Ajax family. That base now draws robot work: HECTOR autonomous wingmen for Ajax would have final assembly and machining in the region under a September 2026 teaming deal with ARX Robotics UK.
The region also draws investment outside defence. Nebius agreed on 13 August 2026 to take capacity at Vantage's CWL1 campus in Newport, the first commercial commitment in the South Wales AI Growth Zone, a government-designated site for faster planning and grid connection. Norgine received more than £20m from the Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund in April 2026 for its plant at Hengoed.
Together these make South Wales a manufacturing region with three growth lines: armoured vehicles and their robots, AI data centres, and medicines.
Ajax's robot partner will be Welsh-built
On 16 September 2026 General Dynamics Land Systems UK and ARX Robotics UK agreed to TEAM ARX's HECTOR autonomous wingmen with the Ajax armoured vehicle, placing final assembly and machining in South Wales. The work would sit beside the Ajax line General Dynamics already runs at Merthyr Tydfil and Oakdale.
The agreement was one of four ARX announcements in four weeks, alongside first GEREON deliveries to Ukraine on 29 September and a new Polish base. None of them states a quantity or a price, so the number of robots, and of Welsh jobs, is unknown. The deal would ADD uncrewed vehicles to an armoured-vehicle base that has so FAR built crewed hulls only.
